Smart Energy Week rolls into Leicester: Monday 16 March to Sunday 22 March

Leicester is at the forefront of the smart meter roll-out campaign as Smart Energy Week arrives in the city.

Smart Energy GB, the national consumer campaign for smart meters, is bringing Smart Energy Week to Leicester from Monday 16 to Sunday 22 March 2015. The week is a chance for residents to find out more about how smart meters can transform the way we buy energy and help households in Leicester get gas and electricity under control.

During Smart Energy Week, Leicester residents will be able to:

  • Spot Gaz & Leccy, the campaign characters who bring to life how gas and electricity are out of control in media across the Leicester area
  • See if they can get Gaz & Leccy under control, in a new interactive game at an exciting Smart Energy GB stand in the Highcross shopping centre
  • Hear from Linda Barker on the transformation that smart meters will make to how we live our lives
  • Join energy experts from Citizens Advice, the Energy Savings Trust, Leicester City Council & Smart Energy GB at the Leicester Smart Energy Week “Take Control of Your Energy” public meeting hosted by Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP

Launching Leicester Smart Energy Week, Linda Barker, home expert and TV presenter, said: “As an interior designer, I’m always thinking about the visual aspects of the home. Yet something that can’t be seen is the energy that powers it, and because of this many of us have no idea how much gas and electricity we use.

“Smart meters change all this. This clever new technology shows you exactly how much energy you're using, how much it's costing you and puts you in control of your gas and electricity, making it easier to manage the household budget.”

Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Smart Energy GB, said: “All 123,000 households in Leicester will be offered a smart meter by 2020, and by the end of this year alone around 5,500 homes in Leicester will have had their new smart meters installed. Smart meters will revolutionise the way we manage our gas and electricity and will finally mean an end to estimated bills. Smart Energy Week is here so we can start to bring the smart meter transformation to Leicester.”

Smart meters are new technology, which will transform how we buy gas and electricity. They will replace the analogue meters we currently have in our homes and microbusinesses, and will provide consumers with near real time information on energy usage in pounds and pence, accurate bills and control over their gas and electricity use. Over the next five years they will be offered to every household in Great Britain, at no extra cost.

About Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB is the independent organisation tasked by government to make sure everyone in Great Britain understands smart meters, the national roll-out and how to use their new meter to get their gas and electricity under control. The organisation will design and deliver the communications campaign that will reach all households and small businesses in England, Scotland and Wales.

About smart meters and the roll-out

Smart meters will replace the analogue meters we currently have in our homes. They will provide consumers with accurate bills, near real time information on energy usage in pounds and pence, and greater control over their gas and electricity.

The smart meter roll-out is an essential technology upgrade, unprecedented in its scale, to improve Great Britain’s energy infrastructure. Between now and 2020, every home and microbusiness across England, Scotland and Wales will be offered a smart meter at no extra cost. Nearly one million smart meters have already been installed.
