Top Tips to Boost Your Financial Wellbeing

As the cost-of-living crisis continues, many households are facing daily worries about money. Financial expert Peter Komolafe shares tips to help you worry less about money, and take control of your finances.

Peter Komolafe’s tips to boost your financial wellbeing

  1. Budgeting

Every month, organising your income and expenses into these 3 pots can help you budget:

    - Essential spending, like bills and groceries
    - Non-Essential spending, like subscriptions or entertainment
    - If you have some money leftover (no matter how little), put that in a savings account

  2. Build a savings buffer

Start saving regularly, even if it's a small amount. This will help you avoid relying on credit cards or overdrafts, so you can be more prepared for unexpected bills.

  3. Don’t be afraid to talk and ask for help

Talking about your money worries can be scary, but it will help you feel less alone. And you could even find some solutions.

Friends and family can provide emotional support.

And if you're struggling with your energy bills, talk to your supplier to find out what support they can provide. One thing they can do is install a smart meter. Smart meters come with an in-home display which shows how much energy is being used in near real time. You can see what you're spending in pounds and pence, which could help give you more control over your energy use.

  1. Plan ahead

It’s important to do things that you enjoy, like eating out or going on holiday. To budget for these, you should plan and account for these costs on an ongoing basis.

What to do if you think you need help with your energy bills

If you’re struggling with money, it’s important to talk to someone, whether that’s friends or family, or even your energy supplier.

And it’s important to remember that if you can’t afford the energy you need, or are already in debt with your energy supplier, there is help available. You can find the help you need here.
