A first-of-its-kind destination for shoppers looking to be eco-friendly, ‘The Green Aisle’ has launched in Homebase stores across Great Britain.

‘The Green Aisle’ showcases energy efficient and eco-friendly home improvement products which will help make homes greener and winter-ready in one place.

Craig Phillips, DIY expert and one of the first to visit 'The Green Aisle’ in Haringey, said:

“I’ve helped hundreds of people improve their homes over the years by making small changes which have a big impact – the same is true for taking small energy efficiency measures in the home.

“It can be hard to know where to start when it comes to making greener choices, so The Green Aisle helps make this process even easier for people by identifying which products are more environmentally-friendly, and likewise understand the positive impact they can have. Whether you’re in the market for new LEDs or eco-friendly paint, something we can all do now is to speak to your energy supplier about getting a smart meter installed. Each installation is a step towards a lower carbon future for Britain and can help you manage your energy use.”

Why is it important to be energy efficient at home?

Being energy efficient at home can help to reduce your gas and electricity bills. Energy Saving Trust found that a household can save up to £581 on energy bills each year by implementing a full range of efficiency measures, purchasing efficient appliances and exercising best practice energy saving behaviour.

As well as this, making energy efficiency changes at home could help you reduce your carbon footprint - a household could save 2,141 kg of CO2e emissions, which is the equivalent of driving 7,500 miles.

Getting a smart meter installed is one simple step you could take to become more energy efficient in your home, manage your energy use and help to reduce your carbon footprint.

How to be energy efficient at home

There are lots of ways to be energy efficient in your home. The top five improvements people are keen to undertake to achieve a greener home are –

  • Use more environmentally friendly paint when redecorating
  • Replace home appliances or products with energy efficient versions
  • Add smart home tech
  • Fit a water saving showerhead
  • Get a smart meter installed

How can smart meters help reduce your energy usage at home?

When you have a smart meter installed you’ll be offered an in-home display. The in-home display shows you exactly how much energy you're using in near-real time in pounds and pence, so you can identify times when you're using more or less energy.

For example, you may realise that leaving your computer on standby consumes more energy than you had thought, and get into the habit of turning it off completely when it's not in use.

There are all kinds of energy-saving adjustments like this that you can make around the house, and keep track of, thanks to the information the in-home display provides.

How can smart meters reduce our nation’s carbon footprint?

Just by having a smart meter installed, you will help us to reduce our carbon emissions as a nation, even without making changes to how you use energy at home.

This is because the near real time data smart meters provide will tell the smart energy system how much energy is being used, when and where across Great Britain.

This will help the energy system better manage the supply and demand of energy to reduce waste, and also shift energy usage away from traditional peak times – which are currently reliant on fossil fuel energy – and make more use of renewables.
