How will life be different in 2035?

Have you ever wondered what life might be like 50 years in the future? Or even 100 years? You don’t need to wait that long for an exciting new future - A new report commissioned by Smart Energy GB found that in just 15 years, the way we live could be very different. And it all starts with how we engage with energy in our sustainable homes of the future…

Smart Energy GB commissioned a new report, The Future Smart Energy Consumer, to explore how life could be different in 2035. Their findings show the future generation will be far more environmentally conscious than previous generations.

This means lots of new, sustainable technology to create a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. And the secure use of energy usage data will be vital to making this greener future a success. More information on how we use energy could enable tailored incentives promoting environmentally friendly behaviours, and allow future generations to keep track of their sustainability. By using energy data in this way in the future, we could even apply it to offsetting the impact of our previous carbon emissions. 

How might our homes be different in 15 years?

1. 3D printed homes

‘Green developments’ made of 3D printed flats could spring up across Britain. These futuristic flats will be much better for the environment than concrete and other unsustainable materials.

2. Automated EV and home battery charging

Charging an EV or your home battery storage will be automated, to make use of the cheapest, greenest energy available. And the added bonus? During peak times when energy costs more, EVs could be used to power homes – great for saving some money, and helping the environment.

3. Energy grants for those on low income

Local authority schemes could use energy data (with the consent of the customer) to predict when people are struggling to pay to keep their home warm. From there, they could provide automatic grants and support, including energy efficiency upgrades like solar and battery storage.

4. Artificial intelligence (AI) dinners

Families could eat meals designed by artificial intelligence and employ robots to do their washing and tidying! What will we do with our evenings then?!

5. Security drones

AI assistants could direct security drones around our homes investigating issues such as intruders, as well as less scary events like devices using more energy than they should be!

6. Hydroponic gardens

Using smart meter enabled settings to control heat and energy use, these hydroponic gardens could provide the perfect environment for growing herbs and plants. No more popping to the shop for coriander!

7. Smart meter predictions

Homes won’t be caught out with broken down white goods… With energy data patterns from smart meters, customers will be able to predict when their washing machines and fridge freezers will fail - losing a freezer full of food will finally be a thing of the past!

8. Caring for others

With the consent of the householder, energy usage data from smart meters could be used as a non-intrusive way to help keep people who have a long-term condition in their own homes independently, for longer.

9. Trading energy

Using smart meter data, energy could be bought and sold directly with neighbours – just like you can sell clothing and furniture today! That means customers will have more control over their energy bills, and could even make some money too!

But don’t just take our word for it. TV presenter and maths expert Rachel Riley, an ambassador for the smart meter rollout agrees:

“It’s amazing to think how different our lives could be in just 15 years’ time, and what great strides we will be making in tackling climate change. Knowing that that my children could be growing up in a world powered by renewable energy, with the incentives and opportunities to live much more sustainable lifestyles than is currently possible is a great comfort. And it’s so good to know that, just by taking the small step of getting a smart meter installed, I have contributed to making this future possible for them and for other generations too.”
