Across England, Scotland and Wales, almost two thirds of us who have bad hair days use an electrical item to fix it, with three quarters saying it can take up to half an hour to redo their do. However, nearly half would try using more eco-friendly methods, if they could see how much they were spending on energy to fix their hair.

We spoke to eco-friendly haircare experts from WhiP in London, The Players Lounge in Edinburgh and Amaryliss Salon in Cardiff to create a list of small sustainable swaps to for your hair care routine.

1. Pick the right products

Most salon standard products are concentrated, so you can use a lot less than you normally might, helping you to buy less single use plastic. You can also choose products with biodegradable packaging.

2. Avoid aerosols

Non-aerosol hairsprays will last 3 or 4 times longer than the aerosol versions, and you can pick them up for the same price.

3. Save on water waste

By taking shorter showers or fitting eco heads to your taps and shower you can reduce your water consumption dramatically. This will also save electricity and money as there's less water to heat.

4. Use an eco-hairdryer

These new and improved versions of the trusty hairdryer are more energy efficient and come in recycled packaging. As the most popular appliance used to fix a bad hair day, an eco-hairdryer will help reduce your carbon footprint while fixing your hair.

5. Recycle/Upcycle

Buying refillable products will drastically cut down the packaging waste and also save you money. For anyone wanting to go the extra mile, bottles you can't refill can be upcycled into a plant or storage pot.
