5 ways football fans can save energy at home

Our research has revealed that fans across Great Britain are loving the return of football, with 37% saying they will be watching the pre- and post-match commentary in addition to the matches. But 1 in 5 admitted they were worried about higher energy bills as a result of their increased energy usage.

We've put together a list of 5 easy ways to save energy, so you can relax in front of the football without worrying about what it's costing you:

1. Cook for everyone at once

If you have a busy household, make sure you're catering for everyone, even those watching something else in another room. Plus, it's more sociable.

Cooking up treats in a microwave uses less energy than the oven, so why not give it a shot, search online for microwave recipes.

2. Get the barbecue out

If the weather's good, it saves on using the oven and can be a great way of making more of an event of the football - even if it's just for the two of you in your household.

3. Only boil the water you need

A quarter of respondents said they had made a cup of tea during each match.

When you're sticking the kettle on, make sure you only boil the amount of water you need, rather than filling it up to the max.

By not over-boiling, you could save around £7 a year.

4. Turn appliances off at the wall

You probably already know that switching appliances off at the plug saves energy, but according to the Energy Saving Trust it could be as much as £30 a year.

When you've finished with the TV - win or lose - remember not to leave it on standby and switch any other electronics off at the wall.

5. Ask your energy supplier for a smart meter

Getting a smart meter installed is a great way to monitor the energy you are consuming. The handy in-home display shows you how much you are spending in near-real time, and if you're on a prepay tariff, you can top up during half-time without leaving the sofa.
