Smart Energy GB wins gold at CIPR Wales Awards 2017

Smart Energy GB’s work to engage consumers in Wales won gold at the annual CIPR Wales awards, held at Cardiff’s City Hall on Friday 24th November.

As the voice of the smart meter rollout, Smart Energy GB works to inform everyone about the benefits of new gas and electricity smart meters coming to every home in Wales. Harnessing the large footfall at the Royal Welsh Show and national Eisteddfod, Smart Energy GB designed events to appeal to all age ranges.

As part of their events Smart Energy GB used energy generating paving, photobombing animated characters Gaz & Leccy along with Welsh speaking actor Meilyr Sion and poet Dafydd Thomas to explain how consumers can bring their own gas and electricity at home under control.

At the 2016 Eisteddfod over 140,000 people walked across the ‘Energy Bridge’ generating electricity through their footsteps with nearly nine in ten visitors saying they were interested in getting a smart meter.

Smart meters are being rolled out to everyone in Wales, England and Scotland, at no additional cost. Already more than 7.7 million have already been installed as part of a national transformation to the way we buy and use gas and electricity.

Fflur Lawton, Head of Communications (Wales) at Smart Energy GB, said:

“I am absolutely delighted to see our events being recognised for the way in which we captured the imagination of the Welsh public during the Royal Welsh Show and Eisteddfod. Understanding of smart meters has increased, people found our event to be engaging, and best of all, nearly everyone was interested in having a smart meter in their own home.

“Wales, along with the rest of Great Britain is in the middle of a vital transformation from an outdated analogue energy system to a digital system that functions with consumers at its heart. Our campaign across Wales has engaged large numbers of consumers, highlighted the need for change and the benefits that households can gain from having smart meters installed.”

About Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB is the voice of the smart meter rollout. It’s our task to help everyone in Great Britain understand smart meters, the national rollout and how to use their new meters to get their gas and electricity under control. Our national campaign is reaching households and microbusinesses in England, Scotland and Wales.

About smart meters and the rollout

Smart meters replace the traditional meters we currently have in our homes. They enable accurate bills, near real time information on energy use in pounds and pence, and greater control over the way we buy and use energy. The smart meter rollout is an essential technology upgrade, unprecedented in its scale, to improve Great Britain’s energy infrastructure.

There are already 7.7 million smart meters installed in homes and microbusinesses across Great Britain. Every household in England, Scotland and Wales will be offered one at no additional cost. Contact your energy supplier today about installing your smart meter.
