Smart Energy GB response to recent incorrect reporting on the security of smart meters

Robert Cheesewright, Director of Policy and Communications, Smart Energy GB said:

“It’s disappointing to see several scaremongering stories in parts of the national press that contain serious inaccuracies and omissions about the security of smart meters.
 
“Smart meters are one of the safest and most secure pieces of technology in your home. The system has been designed with some of the country’s most senior cyber security experts, including the National Cyber Security Centre, a part of the government’s own security organisation, GCHQ.
 
“Smart meters use their own secure, wireless network using radio waves, just like mobile phones or TVs do – they are not connected to the Internet and do not use the Internet to send or receive information. Only your energy information is stored on your smart meter and this is encrypted. Your name, address, bank account or other financial details are not stored on the meter.”
