Smart Energy GB response to BEIS consultation on extending the deadline for first generation smart meter installations

Smart Energy GB’s advice to energy customers following BEIS’ decision to consult on extending the deadline for first generation smart meter installations:

Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Smart Energy GB, said:

“All smart meters give you accurate bills and show you how much energy you’re using and what it’s costing as you go along, regardless of when you upgrade. Independent research shows that people with smart meters love them – the smart system is so much better than the outdated analogue technology we have in our homes.

“Some people with first generation smart meters have had problems maintaining smart functionality when switching energy suppliers, but it’s important to remember this is a temporary issue and that a smart meter will never stop you switching to your chosen provider.

“Starting later this year, the government’s plan is for all first generation smart meters to be enrolled into the national communications network, where they will become interoperable between suppliers. So, unless you switch regularly – more than once a year – there’s definitely no reason to delay upgrading to a smart meter today.”
