Smart Energy GB responds to the development of Accessible In-Home Displays

Energy UK, smart meter display manufacturer geo and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) announced today they have been working with energy suppliers to develop an Accessible In-Home Display (AIHD) for smart meters, which will benefit blind and partially sighted customers.

Smart meters come with an In-Home Display (IHD) showing customers how much energy they have used. The aim of this project is to allow more people to access the benefits of smart meters which can save consumers energy and money. Features of the AIHD include high-contrast, tactile buttons and speech output.

Robert Cheesewright, Director of Corporate Affairs at Smart Energy GB, said: 

“Smart meters are transforming the way customers track their energy spending with a portable in-house display that comes with every installation.  

“Everyone should have access to the full benefits of smart meters so it’s good news that the energy sector and the RNIB are developing an accessible display for blind and partially sighted customers. 

“The Accessible In-Home Display will enable customers to track their energy spending in pounds and pence in near real time, empowering them to make informed decisions about their energy use and saving money on their bills.”
