Smart Energy GB comment on Ofgem’s response to the CMA’s final report into the energy market
Claire Maugham, Director of Policy and Communications said:
“The national rollout of smart meters, coming to every home at no extra cost by 2020, will mean that people who need to use prepay for their gas or electricity won’t have to have an inconvenient and expensive key meter installed. They’ll simply be able to choose a pay-as-you-go tariff, using a standard smart meter. Smart meters will transform the experience of the more than four million people using prepay, who currently pay premium prices for the inconvenience of having to top up at a shop.
"Smart meters are an essential part of empowering consumers with knowledge and visibility over what they’re spending – something both the CMA and Ofgem have said is essential for enhanced competition and a better experience for consumers. Our research shows that three-quarters of people with smart meters say they have the information they need to choose the right supplier and tariff, compared to fewer than six in ten of those without a smart meter."
