Smart Energy GB appoints Head of Media & issues PR tender

Smart Energy GB, the independent organisation leading public engagement to support the nationwide rollout of gas and electricity smart meters has appointed Lucy Maggs as Head of Media.

The GB smart meter rollout is one of the country’s largest technology and infrastructure projects and will see 50 million smart meters installed in more than 26 million homes. Smart meters will give consumers greater control over how they use and buy energy by showing real-time energy usage in pounds and pence, putting an end to estimated bills and the need for physical meter readings and giving consumers better information to choose the right tariff and supplier.

Maggs joins Smart Energy GB from the communications team in the Cabinet Office and Prime Minister’s Office where she was a strategic communications adviser. Previous roles have included Director at agency Kindred, and Head of Communications and Campaigns at homelessness charity Crisis.  Maggs is also the former editor of Third Sector magazine.

Sacha Deshmukh Smart Energy GB Chief Executive said: “Lucy’s appointment is an important addition to Smart Energy GB’s consumer engagement skills.  Her experience in government, in the campaigning charity sector and the media is second to none.  We have a critical task to have a dialogue with every household in the country and demonstrate the role that smart meters will play in all our lives and Lucy will be an important part of our team.”

Maggs’ arrival coincides with further growth in the Smart Energy GB communications team following the appointment of Alicia Painter as Media and Communications Officer. Painter joins Smart Energy GB from Chameleon where she was a communications executive.

Maggs will be working with AAR to oversee the pitch for PR agency support for Smart Energy GB’s public engagement campaigns from 2015 to 2020.  Agencies wishing to be considered as part of this pitch process should contact Alex Young at AAR.  The PR appointment follows Smart Energy GB’s selection of AMV BBDO as creative marketing agency, and PHD as media planning & buying agency, through a process also managed by AAR earlier in the year.
